JKV Health Center Receives the Governor’s Gold Seal Award - POMPANO BEACH – 7/13/12
John Knox Village is extremely excited to announce that our Health Center has been honored with the Governor’s Gold Seal Award. Created in 2002, the Gold Seal Award program recognizes Florida skilled nursing care facilities that have exceptionally high standards and display excellence in the quality of care delivered to their residents.
There are more than 740 skilled nursing care facilities across the State of Florida. JKV’s Health Center currently is one of 19 facilities - less than three percent in Florida - to receive this prestigious distinction.
“Obtaining the Gold Seal Award is truly a privilege and honor. It is a collaborative effort that involves hard work and providing quality care every single day,” Mark Rayner, Director of Health Facilities, said. “Now that we have obtained the award, we have to continue to live up to those standards.”
The approval process began in March, when The Village submitted the application paperwork, recommendation letters, financial stability statements and other pertinent information. The application was then reviewed by the Governor’s Panel on Excellence in Long-Term Care.
Some of the criteria considered includes: must be in operation at minimum of 30 months prior to the application; meet a quality care scoring and ranking that places JKV in the top 10 percent in the region and 15 percent in the State; have no Class I or II deficiencies within a certain timeframe; participate in a consumer satisfaction process involving residents, family members and guardians; have a stable workforce; an outstanding record with the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Council; and provide target in-service training to meet training needs identified.
The next step was a 30-minute presentation with the panel over the phone. On May 2, panel members visited John Knox Village to interview residents, family member and Health Center staff. The purpose was to validate the positive outcomes from the various satisfaction materials submitted.
Finally, on May 21 in Tampa, representatives from The Village had the opportunity to address the panel for 15 minutes. At this time, the panel formally approved JKV as an official Gold Seal Award recipient.
Florida Governor Rick Scott then endorsed the Gold Seal Award, which will now be added to our Health Center’s license and all related marketing materials. Every two years, JKV will have to apply for a renewal of the Gold Seal Award.
“We are so proud of our Health Center and our entire team of dedicated caregivers who have worked so hard to achieve this high standard of excellence,” said Robert Scharmann, JKV President and CEO.
Part of what makes our Health Center successful is our resident volunteers. “Our Resident Senate Health Center Committee has 13 members who meet monthly and regularly volunteer in our Health Center,” said Nancy Lee Mathews, a resident who is the Committee Past Chair and current member. “We have four Committee members trained to conduct Resident Satisfactory Surveys with residents who temporarily resided in our Health Center and have since returned to their independent living in The Village.”
In addition to the Committee, Nancy said there are more than 70 residents who continue to volunteer their time in the Health Center. She also credits the incredible Health Center employees and the embracing of JKV’s Premier Resident Centered Care philosophy, which allows our residents the ability to make their own decisions while maintaining control of their lives and remaining highly active.
John Knox Village’s Health Center is a fully-licensed, Medicare/Medicaid Certified, 177-bed skilled nursing facility including a physical, speech, occupational and balance therapy center. Our Health Center also has received a 5-Star Rating by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration.
